I am afraid I don’t know this one as my area of science, psychology, is more do with the mind, rather than the body.

That is an answer we do not fully understand yet. We do know what muscles are made of (proteins) and therefore making muscles *must* be about protein synthesis. But it is much more complicated than that, because to increase the size of a muscle you first have to break it down, because you can’t just add protein at random. Therefore there are all sorts of pathways controlling just how much protein is laid down and where. This is, however, not really my area!
