Hi Leigh – mostly this is about building up your fitness so that your body – bones, muscles, joints – have time to adapt. A good way of doing this is by starting off run/walking. There are some good tips here if you want to build up gradually http://www.runnersforum.co.uk/beginners/4953-beginners-basic-guide-starting-out.html

Of course, if you are compeitively racing, you are going to work at 110% in your competitions, so you will feel like jelly after that as you worked so hard. But if you are a beginner, you need to build up gradually. A bit of ‘jelly legs’ also shows you worked hard. I get it whenever I increase my weights or my reps on leg exercises too.
