It has a lot to do with how fast you can contract your muscles and how fast you can get oxygen into your body. Some people have more “fast twitch” muscles than other people who have more “slow twitch” muscle. This means that the person with fast-twitch muscles (all else being equal) will be able to out-sprint the slow twitch person. However, if the slow twitch person also has a large heart and healthy lungs, they will be able to use oxygen at a faster rate, meaning that they will be able to run a long distance quite fast, and probably faster than the fast twitch person. Fast twitch muscles help you sprint, but they fatigue quickly, so don’t help you run long distances. There is a lot more to it than that, but it’s a big part of the reason.
