The stitch is really annoying isn’t it? It’s even more annoying for people who don’t run much because they tend to experience it more often. We don’t exactly know what causes a stitch because it doesn’t happen all the time, or very often. Our best guess is that internal organs get bashed around during running and these can cause a pain in the side, usually just below the ribs. I run quite often, but still get a stitch sometimes. To stop it, I usually have to stop running, recovery a little and start again more slowly, and build back up to my normal pace. I also make sure I run on an empty stomach (by only running 2-3 hours after my last meal). Sombody once told me that swinging your arm more vigorously on the affect side reduces the stitch. That’s never worked for me though!
