Muscles are made up of lots of individual fibres, a bit like a stretchy rope. When you exercise you are actually breaking individual fibres in this muscle, and when they grow back, they are stronger and there are more of them. That is why over time muslces get visably bigger if you lift really heavy weights and break lots and lots of these fibres. So when you have done lots of hard energy you have broken lots and lots of these small fibres. this is what makes the sore feeling.
