Athletes have a lot to teach us about damage and disease of the body because they put their bodies under such extreme stress. In general though sporting injuries are much easier to fix than disease because athletes look after their bodies so well.
I first wanted to understand how the body worked, and because I enjoyed sport and exercise I wanted to focus on that. What I have found out has helped people with their own sports but I didn’t start out aiming to help people, I just wanted to find stuff out. It’s nice that people find my knowledge useful though.
I think it first started purely because I enjoyed playing and learning about sport! I remember speaking to my PE teacher when I was about 16 and he asked me what I wanted to do after my A levels. I said I wasn’t sure and he said to just aim to do something I enjoyed. He told me that doing something you really enjoyed would make it much easier to work hard at it, and he was right! From there I studied Sport Science at University and realised that the area I enjoyed most was researching people’s response selection and decision making. I wanted to help people perform better in sporting situations and help us learn more about what goes in our minds during sport, often without us even knowing about it!
I believe that everyone can learn new ‘mental skills’ that can help them be more successful at whatever they do and basically be happier too – whether its an exam, a play, public speaking or an athletic performance. I wanted to study and find out what the best mental skills are so that I can teach them to people.
