That very much depends on your definition of “great”! If you mean will we evolve into a different species, then that is likely. Unfortunately, it is probably more likely that humans will find some way of wiping each other out (through war or climate change). This would probably not result in the complete extinction of humans but it would certainly cause an evolutionary “bottleneck” from which new human species will develop. What they look like will depend on the environment they develop in. At present, humans adapt to their environments by changing it to suit them. In cold places, they heat rooms up (which needs energy), whereas in hot places they cool rooms down (by air condition, which needs energy). If we were ever to run out of energy to generate enough electricity, humans would be forced to adapt biologically to the environment, something we have not had to do since we invented shelter and clothes.

i like to think we might evolve into a species that has more thought for our place within the world and universe. Without sounding like a hippy we have a tendency at the moment to plough ahead with new technologies without looking at what the resulting effect might be on the planet and the balance of life on it. It will only sustain so much ‘abuse’ before it’s had enough and starts fighting back. Climate change is a prime example, we need to develop a greater sense responsibility for the changes in our climate and impliment new ways to continue living our lives, but in a way that doesn’t effect the balance of life on earth.
